What I’m loving

Queer Eye

I have such a love for this show. It is like happiness and hope wrapped in a TV show. Season 2 just came out on Netflix and the first episode only made me love the show more. I can’t wait to watch the rest of the season.

The Set-Up on Netflix

I love a romantic comedy and it has been ages since one has been made. The fact that Netflix made one makes me so happy.

A summer book series for the family

Last summer Carlos read, The Series of Unfortunate Events, to the kids, and it created so many conversations and much mutual joking. This summer we are reading Harry Potter. We alternate between me reading aloud and the audiobook while we are driving. We just finished book 3 and characters or plot lines are discussed on a daily basis. It is so much fun!

What I’m reading

I’m Still Here by Austin Channing Brown

I feel like this is such an important book. I just finished I’m Still Here a few minutes ago, and I am still processing it, but I highly recommend it.

From Amazon: In a time when nearly all institutions (schools, churches, universities, businesses) claim to value “diversity” in their mission statements, I’m Still Here is a powerful account of how and why our actions so often fall short of our words. Austin writes in breathtaking detail about her journey to self-worth and the pitfalls that kill our attempts at racial justice, in stories that bear witness to the complexity of America’s social fabric–from Black Cleveland neighborhoods to private schools in the middle-class suburbs, from prison walls to the boardrooms at majority-white organizations.

The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah

From Amazon: Thirteen-year-old Leni, a girl coming of age in a tumultuous time, is caught in the riptide of her parents’ passionate, stormy relationship, and dares to hope that Alaska will lead to a better future for her family. She is desperate for a place to belong. Her mother, Cora, will do anything and go anywhere for the man she loves, even if means following him into the unknown. At once an epic story of human survival and love, and an intimate portrait of a family tested beyond endurance, The Great Alone offers a glimpse into a vanishing way of life in America.

Freeing Your Child From Anxiety by Tamar Chansky Ph.D.

One of my kids is dealing with anxiety and while we have been talking to his doctor about it, Freeing Your Child From Anxiety gave us some great practical ideas to help him deal with his anxiety.

A Defense of Honor by Kristi Ann Hunter

I love regency era fiction, so this book was right up my alley. There is a free Kindle novella that is the prequel to A Defense of Honor, so it might be a good way to see if this is your kind of fiction.

From Amazon: When Katherine “Kit” FitzGilbert turned her back on London society more than a decade ago, she determined never to set foot in a ballroom again. But when business takes her to London and she’s forced to run for her life, she stumbles upon not only a glamorous ballroom but also Graham, Lord Wharton. What should have been a chance encounter becomes much more as Graham embarks on a search for his friend’s missing sister and is convinced Kit knows more about the girl than she’s telling.

The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena

I read The Couple Next Door in one day. I don’t often read suspense, but this one sucked me in right away. It also sort of disturbed me, so if that is not your thing, this might not be the book for you.

From Amazon: It all started at a dinner party. . .

A domestic suspense debut about a young couple and their apparently friendly neighbors—a twisty, rollercoaster ride of lies, betrayal, and the secrets between husbands and wives. . .

Anne and Marco Conti seem to have it all—a loving relationship, a wonderful home, and their beautiful baby, Cora. But one night, when they are at a dinner party next door, a terrible crime is committed. Suspicion immediately lands on the parents. But the truth is a much more complicated story.
