Making mundane tasks a little more fun

How I make mundane tasks a little more fun.

Being a stay-at-home mom is filled with a lot of mundane tasks. Some days I feel like my brain is slowly starting to turn to mush. One of the main ways I fight that feeling is by listening to podcasts.

I recently had several people ask how I find time for podcasts so I’ll share how and why I do because it is such an important part of my routine.

Why I listen to podcasts

Let’s start with the fact that I am an extrovert — I need adult conversation during my days! Podcasts help me feel that void, even when I can’t be part of the conversation. It helps me feel in some way connected to other adults.

Podcasts help to stimulate my mind when I feel a little trapped in the monotonous tasks of cooking and washing dishes for what feels like the hundredth time that day.

Depending on what I need at a particular moment, I can get profound encouragement and wisdom with just the touch of a button. I also get laugh-out-loud humor, which is really needed some days.

How I find time for podcasts

In the car

I listen to podcasts in the car regularly. The car is the only time we listen to kids’ podcasts. My kids love them, and I enjoy listening to something different on a regular basis, too. But sometimes I turn their music on in the back speakers while I stick my iPod under my seatbelt strap on my shoulder to listen to my own podcast.

In the kitchen

I listen to a podcast every day while cooking dinner. TV time for the kids is at 5 p.m. every day while I cook dinner. As soon as their hour of TV begins, I turn on a podcast. My podcasts entertain me every evening. It is one whole hour of peace (if you call keeping my toddler from destroying the house peace).

In any way

I find time to listen to podcasts whenever I can: Earphones while vacuuming; when I’m cleaning; when I’m getting dressed.

There are hundreds of podcasts to choose from on pretty much any topic you can imagine. If you are looking for somewhere to start, these are my favorites at the moment and these are my favorites for kids.

I would love to know what your favorite podcasts are, either for you or your kids. Leave me a comment and let me know!
